Women in labour are being turned away from hospitals

According to new Freedom of Information data, the number times pregnant women were turned away from overrun maternity units in Britain has jumped by 70 per cent in just two years.

“From time to time, maternity units do need to close temporarily when they experience a peak in activity; after all, babies do not arrive to a neat and convenient schedule. If a unit needs to shut its doors repeatedly, however, it suggests a much deeper problem.

And that problem for many units will be the major shortage of midwives. At the Royal College of Midwives, we estimate that the NHS in England is short of the equivalent of around 3,500 full-time midwives.”
