India’s biometric identity cards spark privacy concerns

Over a billion Indians now have identity cards with unique ID numbers associated with their biometric information (fingerprints and iris scan). The card is essential for many things in daily life, from opening a bank account to accessing welfare schemes. The government says the system will help stamp out corruption and increase digital transparency, but critics denounce a case of “Big Brother”. Our correspondents report.
