“Referring to a topic he’s long been passionate about — the shortage of skilled laborers like plumbers and builders in the U.S. — Rowe explained:

“I’m going to suggest [to Congress] that the skills gap is every bit as important as unemployment and the presence of 5.6 million available jobs right now that people don’t seem excited about.

The best way to close that skills gap is to affirmatively make a persuasive case for opportunities that actually exist.”

The 5.6 million figure is a reference to a 2016 Labor Department study that found that there is a near-record high in the number of U.S. job openings, a result of the fact that “many Americans don’t have the skills that those available jobs require.””
